Using traditional Spanish clay structures to cool data centres, and save CO2 emissions
Here’s a radical idea - how about using the cooling properties of clay to cool spaces like data centres?
This idea means combining the ancient tradition of Spanish botijos - a clay container which is a typical element of culture in many parts of Spain - to solve the modern-day problem of cooling places that get hot, like data centres and server rooms.
Data centres and server rooms use enormous amounts of energy and water as well as emitting CO2, potentially endangering ecosystems, unless these risks are effectively mitigated. Claudia Paredes, a designer, has presented a solution that uses the tradition of Spanish botijos combined with structures inspired by termite mounds, along with a system of humidity and temperature sensors, to cool data centres.
Sounds like an innovative solution to us!
